Wendell Hardwood Market
Two Distinct Hardwood Situations in Wendell
Wendell divides between its established older neighborhoods and Wendell Falls, the master-planned community that opened around 2015. The older neighborhoods carry red oak that has largely been untouched. Wendell Falls brought white oak and engineered hardwood in wider plank widths. We have history with both.
Includes
Westlake, Austin Pines, Golden Gate Forest, Heritage Crossing, Lake Wendell Estates
Older Wendell neighborhoods carry red oak floors that in many cases have never been refinished. That means the wear layer is often largely intact, which is an ideal situation for a first full sand and finish. These floors have decades of life left in them. We assess every floor at the in-home visit to confirm what is possible before any commitment is made.

Those floors are now coming back for refinishing -- and we know what went in. Wendell Falls construction featured white oak and engineered hardwood, often in wider plank widths. White oak requires water popping and careful stain preparation to achieve even color. Engineered hardwood must be individually assessed for wear layer before a refinish is recommended.

How We Work
Our Refinishing Process
The same structured process on every job, whether it is a first refinish on original Wendell red oak or a wide-plank white oak floor in Wendell Falls.
Free In-Home Assessment
We visit your Wendell home, measure the space, and assess your floors following NWFA standards. For Wendell Falls homes where Izral installed the original floors, we already know the species and construction -- wear layer measurement confirms how much material remains. For older Wendell neighborhoods with red oak, we assess how many refinish cycles are left and what the floor can support.
Prep and Dust Containment Setup
Furniture is removed from the work area. We hang plastic over doorways, keep HVAC vents open to maintain conditioned air circulation, and set up air scrubbers with external filters on your air returns before sanding begins.
Sanding
We use our Bona PowerDrive planetary sander and Lagler Hummel drum sander paired with Festool HEPA vacuums and cyclonic dust separators. The PowerDrive removes less material per pass than a drum sander -- the right call when wear layer protection matters on older Wendell red oak floors.
Water Popping and Stain Application
Every stained floor is water popped. We apply sample colors directly on your floor under your actual lighting conditions so you see how each option reads before committing to the full floor. Essential on wide-plank white oak in Wendell Falls where grain variation makes color preview especially important.
Finish Coats
We apply a sealer coat followed by multiple finish coats, sanding lightly between coats. Water-based systems only: Bona Traffic HD, Bona Mega, and European Collection hardwax oils. No oil-modified polyurethane.
Final Walkthrough and Warranty
We inspect the finished floor with you before we leave. Every refinishing project is backed by a five-year workmanship warranty, documented in your written proposal.
Why 12th And Oak
What Sets Us Apart for Wendell Homeowners
Izral Daniels, owner and Bona Certified Craftsman, has personal roots in Wendell. He installed the original hardwood floors in Wendell Falls when the community opened around 2015. That history is not a marketing line -- it means we know the species, the construction methods, and how those floors have aged in the first decade of life. When Wendell Falls homeowners call for a refinish, we are not approaching their floors cold.
In the older Wendell neighborhoods, the story is different: red oak floors that have largely been untouched and often still have most of their wear layer intact. These are excellent candidates for a first full refinish. The Bona PowerDrive planetary sander removes less material per pass than a drum sander, which helps preserve even more of that remaining life.
We work exclusively with water-based finish systems: Bona Traffic HD, Bona Mega, and European Collection hardwax oils. We do not apply oil-modified polyurethane. Water-based finishes cure faster, amber less over time, and are lower VOC. On white oak, they keep the color clean and cooler rather than pulling yellow over time.
We Installed the Original Wendell Falls Floors
Izral installed the original hardwood in Wendell Falls when it opened around 2015. When those floors come back for refinishing, we already know what we are working with -- species, construction, and how the product has aged. That history matters at the assessment stage.
Water Popping on Every Stained Floor
Every stained floor gets water popped before stain application. The result is richer, more even color, particularly on wide-plank white oak in Wendell Falls where grain variation requires extra preparation. Standard practice for us, not a premium add-on.
Bona PowerDrive Planetary Sander
We own one of fewer than 2% of these machines in the country. The planetary head removes less material per pass than a drum sander -- the right choice for older Wendell red oak floors where protecting remaining wear layer is the first priority.
Three-Stage Dust Containment
Cyclonic dust separator at the sander head, HEPA filtration vacuums, and air scrubbers on your air returns. We run all three stages, not just one.
Five-Year Workmanship Warranty
Every refinishing project is covered for five years from the completion date. Documented in your written proposal. Most competitors offer one year on labor, if anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Refinishing in Wendell typically ranges from $4.50 to $9.00 per square foot depending on floor condition, stain color, and finish system. Recoating starts at $2.00 per square foot. We carry a $1,500 project minimum. You receive a detailed written estimate after a free in-home assessment with no hidden fees.
Absolutely, and those are some of the most rewarding projects we take on. Izral has personal roots in Wendell and installed the original hardwood floors in Wendell Falls when the community opened around 2015. Those floors are now reaching the point where a refinish makes real sense -- the wood has character, the finish shows wear in the right places, and we know exactly what went in. When you call us for a Wendell Falls refinish, we are not starting from scratch on your floor assessment.
Wendell Falls construction used primarily white oak and engineered hardwood, often in wider plank widths. White oak takes stain exceptionally well when properly prepared -- water popping before stain application is essential on wide planks where grain variation can cause uneven color absorption. For homeowners who prefer a more natural, low-sheen result, Bona Craft Oil is worth discussing. Engineered hardwood in Wendell Falls must be individually assessed for refinishability, as wear layer thickness varies significantly by product.
Red oak floors in established Wendell neighborhoods that have never been refinished are often in better shape than homeowners expect. The first step is always a wear layer measurement -- how much material remains above the tongue determines what is possible. Red oak that has never been sanded typically has most of its original wear layer intact. If that is the case, a full refinish is straightforward. We assess every floor at the free in-home visit before making any recommendation.
Water popping is the process of lightly misting the bare sanded wood with water before applying stain. The moisture temporarily opens the wood grain, allowing stain to absorb more deeply and evenly. The result is richer color, better coverage, and more consistency across the floor. This matters especially on wide-plank white oak, which is common in Wendell Falls, where grain variation can cause uneven stain absorption without proper preparation. We do it on every stained floor.
Most refinishing projects take four to five days: two days for sanding, half a day for staining if applicable, and two days for finish coats and curing. Many customers stay in their homes during the project. We run a three-stage dust containment system with HEPA filtration, and our water-based finishes are low VOC and fast drying. We discuss your specific floor plan and situation during the assessment so you can plan accordingly.
Yes. Westlake, Austin Pines, Golden Gate Forest, Heritage Crossing, and Lake Wendell Estates are all active service areas for us. Older established Wendell neighborhoods frequently have red oak floors that have never been refinished and often have significant wear layer remaining. These are often excellent candidates for a first full refinish.
We work exclusively with water-based finish systems: Bona Traffic HD, Bona Mega, and European Collection hardwax oils including Bona Craft Oil. We do not apply oil-modified polyurethane. Water-based finishes cure faster, amber less over time, and are lower VOC. On white oak specifically, oil-modified poly produces a warm yellowing tone that many homeowners want to avoid. Water-based systems keep white oak looking white.
