The Challenge
The family room was carpeted while the surrounding main-level rooms had existing 2.25-inch red oak. The homeowners wanted a seamless lace-in between the new and existing wood and a rich, dark warm-brown color that oil-based polyurethane could not achieve cleanly. The Rubio Monocoat 2C system requires careful grain preparation and precise blend ratios to hit a custom color consistently across both new and existing red oak, which can stain differently.
What We Did
We removed the carpet and subfloor material in the family room, prepped the surface, and installed new 2.25-inch select red oak laced into the existing hardwood at every doorway. Once installation was complete, we sanded the entire main level to a uniform plane. We then applied water-popped stain preparation to equalize grain absorption between the old and new wood, and finished with a custom Rubio Monocoat 2C blend dialed to a deep, warm brown. The hardwax oil penetrates into the fiber rather than sitting on top, giving the color depth and leaving a low-sheen surface that does not show scratches or footprints the way a surface finish does.
