Refinished hardwood floor inlay star medallion in Austin Pond Clayton NC, custom hardwax oil blend bringing out dramatic species contrast in geometric star pattern
Refinishing

Red Oak Refinishing with Inlay Medallion, Austin Pond

Severely worn 3.25" red oak throughout this Austin Pond home in Clayton. The original finish had ambered heavily and worn through to bare wood in the traffic lanes. Complete refinish with the Lagler Hummel, water popping throughout, and a custom blended hardwax oil that transformed the floor -- including an existing inlaid star medallion that came alive under the new finish.

The Challenge

The floor had two problems. The first was the condition: finish worn completely through the high-traffic areas, the grain channels between boards blackened with dirt, and a heavy orange-amber cast from the original finish coating everything else. The second was the medallion. An inlaid star medallion built from multiple wood species sat in the center of the main room. Each species in a medallion sands at a different rate and absorbs finish differently. The custom hardwax oil blend had to work across all of them -- enhancing the contrast between species rather than flattening it.

What We Did

We sanded the entire floor with the Lagler Hummel drum sander, removing the old finish and the contamination in the grain channels down to clean bare wood. Water popping was applied throughout before finish -- on a worn 3.25" red oak floor that has been through multiple cycles of traffic and cleaning, water popping is the only reliable way to open the grain back up evenly before a penetrating oil goes down. The custom hardwax oil blend was applied across the full field and worked into the open grain by hand. The medallion responded exactly as it should: the different species absorbed at slightly different rates, and the contrast between them came back sharp and clean. The finished floor reads dark and rich throughout, and the medallion -- which had been buried under decades of amber finish -- is visible for the first time in years.

Overhead view with equipment staged. The amber-orange cast is visible across the entire field. This is what years of oil-based finish yellowing looks like from above.

During

Lagler Hummel drum sander in action on red oak floor in Austin Pond Clayton NC, light illuminating contrast between sanded pale wood and remaining old finish
Lagler Hummel mid-pass. The sander light shows the contrast between the bare wood coming clean behind it and the old amber finish still ahead. Every pass removes the old finish and reveals the raw red oak underneath.
Water popped red oak floor in Austin Pond Clayton NC, fully sanded and wet from water popping before custom hardwax oil application, open plan living room with fireplace and staircase
Sanded and water popped. The moisture opens the grain across the entire surface before the hardwax oil goes down. This step is what makes a penetrating finish absorb evenly on a floor that has been through years of traffic and cleaning. Fireplace, kitchen, and staircase all visible -- the full scope of the project in one shot.

After

Low angle grain detail of finished red oak floor with custom hardwax oil blend in Austin Pond Clayton NC, dark dramatic tone showing open grain texture
Grain detail at floor level. The custom hardwax oil penetrates into the open grain rather than building a surface layer on top of it. The depth and texture are the wood itself -- not a plastic coat sitting on top.
Finished red oak floors with custom hardwax oil blend in kitchen and living area in Austin Pond Clayton NC, very dark rich tone with white cabinetry and dark island
The kitchen and living area finished. The custom blend reads very dark and rich against the white lower cabinets. The same floor that was orange and worn through is now consistent, deep, and matte wall to wall.
Refinished hardwood floor inlay star medallion in Austin Pond Clayton NC, custom hardwax oil bringing out species contrast in geometric star pattern with dark field
The inlaid star medallion after refinishing. Each species absorbed the hardwax oil at a slightly different rate, and the contrast between them came back sharper than it had been in years. The dark custom blend makes the lighter star points read dramatically against the field. This medallion had been buried under amber finish for decades.
