Apex Hardwood Market

Two Very Different Hardwood Situations in Apex

Apex ranges from flagship master-planned communities with premium wide-plank white oak to established neighborhoods with solid red and white oak from the 1990s and early 2000s. The right approach depends on the specific floor, not the zip code.

Flagship Communities (Peak Crossing, Salem Village)

Includes

Peak Crossing, Salem Village, Salem Village West, Greenwood Commons, Haddon Hall

Apex has the highest median home value in the Triangle at around $585,000. Homeowners in Peak Crossing and Salem Village expect finish quality that matches a luxury remodel. Wide-plank white oak is the most common species. Water popping is non-negotiable. European hardwax oil is frequently requested as a finish alternative to traditional polyurethane. We know these communities and deliver results at that level.

Established and Growing Communities

Includes

Scotts Mill, Weatherstone, Hamlet, Lexington, Zion Woods

Apex continues to grow and the flooring mix reflects that. Scotts Mill and Weatherstone have solid hardwood in red and white oak from the late 1990s and early 2000s. Newer sections feature wide-plank white oak and some engineered hardwood over slab. Each floor type requires a different approach and we assess every project individually before making a recommendation.

How We Work

Our Refinishing Process

The same structured process on every job, whether it is wide-plank white oak in Peak Crossing or solid red oak in Scotts Mill.

01

Free In-Home Assessment

We visit your Apex home, measure the space, and assess your floors following NWFA standards. For Peak Crossing, Salem Village, and similar communities, we verify species, wear layer, and stain suitability before making any recommendation. Apex homeowners have high expectations and we match that standard from the first visit.

02

Prep and Dust Containment Setup

Furniture is removed from the work area. We hang plastic over doorways, keep HVAC vents open to maintain conditioned air circulation, and set up air scrubbers with external filters on your air returns before sanding begins.

03

Sanding

We use our Bona PowerDrive planetary sander and Lagler Hummel drum sander paired with Festool HEPA vacuums and cyclonic dust separators. The PowerDrive removes material evenly across broad plank faces, which matters on wide-plank white oak common throughout Apex.

04

Water Popping and Stain Application

Every stained floor is water popped. We apply sample colors directly on your floor under your actual lighting conditions so you see how each option reads before committing to the full floor. On wide-plank white oak, this step is the difference between professional results and visible color inconsistency.

05

Finish Coats

We apply a sealer coat followed by multiple finish coats, sanding lightly between coats. Water-based systems only: Bona Traffic HD, Bona Mega, and European Collection hardwax oils. No oil-modified polyurethane.

06

Final Walkthrough and Warranty

We inspect the finished floor with you before we leave. Every refinishing project is backed by a five-year workmanship warranty, documented in your written proposal.

Why 12th And Oak

What Sets Us Apart for Apex Homeowners

Izral Daniels, owner and Bona Certified Craftsman, has been refinishing floors in Wake County since 2002. Apex is the Triangle's highest-value residential market and the expectations here reflect that. Homeowners in Peak Crossing and Salem Village are often doing comprehensive remodels and need flooring results that match the quality of the rest of the project. That is the standard we hold ourselves to on every Apex job.

Water popping is the step that separates good stain jobs from exceptional ones. We mist every stained floor before stain goes down. On wide-plank white oak -- the dominant species in Apex -- skipping this step produces visible color inconsistency across the broad plank face. We do not skip it, and we treat it as standard practice.

We work exclusively with water-based finish systems: Bona Traffic HD, Bona Mega, and European Collection hardwax oils. We do not apply oil-modified polyurethane. European hardwax oil is a popular choice in Apex for homeowners who want a more matte, penetrating finish with a clean, natural look and no amber tone.

Bona PowerDrive Planetary Sander

We own one of fewer than 2% of these machines in the country. The planetary head removes material evenly across broad plank faces and removes less per pass than a drum sander. Both matter on wide-plank white oak throughout Peak Crossing and Salem Village.

Water Popping on Every Stained Floor

Every stained floor gets water popped before stain application. Standard practice on every job. The result is richer, more even color across the entire floor, particularly on the wide-plank white oak common throughout Apex.

European Hardwax Oil Available

European Collection hardwax oil is available as an alternative to traditional polyurethane. Popular in Apex for wide-plank white oak -- more matte, more natural, no amber, and easier to spot-repair over time.

Three-Stage Dust Containment

Cyclonic dust separator at the sander head, HEPA filtration vacuums, and air scrubbers on your air returns. We run all three stages, not just one.

Five-Year Workmanship Warranty

Every refinishing project is covered for five years from the completion date. Documented in your written proposal. Most competitors offer one year on labor, if anything.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Refinishing in Apex typically ranges from $4.50 to $9.00 per square foot depending on floor condition, stain color, and finish system. Recoating starts at $2.00 per square foot. We carry a $1,500 project minimum. You receive a detailed written estimate after a free in-home assessment with no hidden fees.

It does. Apex has the highest median home value in the Triangle at around $585,000. At that price point, the condition of hardwood floors is a meaningful line item in any resale or remodel decision. A professional refinish on wide-plank white oak -- done correctly with water popping and premium water-based finish -- delivers a result that is indistinguishable from new flooring at a fraction of the replacement cost. We see a lot of Apex homeowners doing high-end kitchen and bath renovations who want the floors to match that quality level. That is exactly what we deliver.

Water popping is the process of lightly misting the bare sanded wood with water before stain is applied. The moisture temporarily opens the wood grain so stain penetrates more deeply and evenly. The result is richer, more consistent color across the entire floor. On wide-plank white oak -- the dominant species in Peak Crossing, Salem Village, and most newer Apex communities -- the broad plank face exposes significant grain variation. Without water popping, color reads unevenly. Contractors who skip this step do so because it adds time and requires expertise to execute correctly. We water pop every stained floor. It is standard practice, not an upgrade.

We offer three finish systems: Bona Traffic HD (our highest-durability water-based finish, excellent for high-traffic Apex homes), Bona Mega (water-based, slightly softer sheen), and European Collection hardwax oils for homeowners who want a more matte, penetrating finish with a natural look. We do not apply oil-modified polyurethane on any project. European hardwax oil is particularly popular in Apex because it gives wide-plank white oak a very clean, European-influenced look -- no amber, no plastic sheen. We discuss all three options during the in-home assessment.

Yes. Peak Crossing and Salem Village are two of our most active areas in Apex. These are flagship communities with premium construction and high homeowner expectations. Wide-plank white oak is the most common species, and the expectation for finish quality matches a luxury remodel. We have done extensive work in both communities and are familiar with the construction types and floor products common to each.

The wear layer is the thickness of solid wood above the tongue on a hardwood plank -- the material available for future sandings. Each refinish cycle removes approximately 1/32 inch. Once the wear layer is gone, refinishing is no longer an option. Most Apex homes have solid hardwood with a standard wear layer of 3/16 to 1/4 inch. We measure wear layer during every in-home assessment using a calibrated gauge. If your floor has enough material, we tell you so. If it does not, we tell you that too. We do not sand floors that should not be sanded.

Most refinishing projects take four to five days: two days for sanding, half a day for staining if applicable, and two days for finish coats and curing. Many customers stay in their homes during the process. We run a three-stage dust containment system with HEPA filtration, and our water-based finishes are low VOC and fast drying. We discuss your specific floor plan and timeline during the in-home assessment so you can plan accordingly.

Every refinishing project is backed by a five-year workmanship warranty covering the quality of our sanding, staining, and finish application. The warranty is documented in every written proposal. If a workmanship issue arises within five years of the completion date, we return to address it at no charge. Most competitors offer one year on labor, if anything at all. Our five-year commitment reflects our confidence in our process and the equipment we use.
