Red Oak Refinishing with Compass Rose Medallion, Glen Laurel
Aged oil-based poly had turned these 2.25" red oak floors amber and orange. Sanded back to bare wood, including a pre-installed walnut and maple compass rose medallion, and finished natural with a water-based system.

The Challenge
The original oil-based polyurethane had aged for years, adding a heavy amber and orange cast that darkened the entire space. The clients wanted to reclaim the natural look of the red oak without staining. An additional consideration: the foyer contained a pre-installed compass rose medallion built from multiple species (walnut, maple, and a dark border ring), each of which sands and absorbs finish differently. The lighter maple points are especially unforgiving; uneven sanding shows immediately.
What We Did
We sanded the entire floor down to bare wood using the Bona PowerDrive planetary sander, taking extra care across the medallion to keep all the species at an even level without burning through the lighter maple points or flattening the walnut field grain. Finish selection was critical for a natural result. Oil-based products would restart the yellowing cycle immediately. We applied Bona ClearSeal as the sealer to lock in the bare wood tone across all species, followed by two coats of Bona Mega One in satin. Every species in the medallion reads true: the walnut is warm and dark, the maple stays bright, and the red oak field sits cleanly between them.
