Red Oak Installation, Repair, and Refinishing with DuraSeal Special Walnut, Crabtree Heights
New 3.25-inch red oak installed and laced into the existing hardwood in the family room, lace-in repairs made throughout the main level, then the entire floor sanded with the Lagler Hummel, stained DuraSeal Special Walnut over Bona IntenseSeal, and finished with Bona Traffic HD.

This Raleigh hardwood project combined new 3.25-inch red oak installation in a carpeted family room with lace-in repairs throughout the main level, followed by a full sand and refinish using DuraSeal Special Walnut and Bona Traffic HD. Old and new wood, different finish histories, and a whole-home scope came together as one continuous floor.
The Challenge
This North Hills home had 3.25-inch red oak throughout the main level with a heavy orange-amber cast from the original finish. The family room had been carpeted, so new wood had to be installed and laced into the existing hardwood at every doorway before anything else could happen. Scattered lace-in repairs from earlier work also had to be integrated. The homeowners wanted a warmer, darker walnut tone that would read consistently across old and new wood, under both natural light and the kitchen's warm recessed and under-cabinet lighting. The light source matters with stain: DuraSeal Special Walnut reads as a cool walnut-brown in natural light and shifts warmer, almost amber-brown, under incandescent sources. That shift had to be factored into the selection process.
What We Did
We installed new 3.25-inch select red oak in the family room and laced it into the existing floor at every transition. All lace-in repair areas from prior work were integrated in the same pass. Once installation was complete, we sanded the entire main level flat with the Lagler Hummel belt sander, cutting through decades of old finish and bringing all boards, new and old, to a single bare plane. Stain samples were cut in the home and evaluated in multiple lighting conditions before the homeowners confirmed DuraSeal Special Walnut. We applied Bona IntenseSeal as the sealer coat to lock the stain and control grain raise, followed by two coats of Bona Traffic HD in satin for durability. The IntenseSeal first coat reads cooler under natural light. The Traffic HD final coat under warm kitchen lighting shows the amber shift, which the homeowners saw in the samples and chose deliberately.

Common Questions
What is lace-in installation and when is it needed?
Lace-in installation is the process of weaving new hardwood boards into an existing floor at the transition point rather than creating a visible seam or threshold between old and new wood. It is used when a room that previously had carpet or another flooring type is being converted to match adjacent hardwood. The new boards are cut in a staggered interlocking pattern at the doorway, nailed through the existing boards, and then the entire floor is sanded together so old and new read as one surface.
How do you match new red oak to an old existing floor?
Species match is the starting point: you install the same species, same width, and same cut. Beyond that, matching happens in the finish. Both old and new wood are sanded together as one continuous surface, then water-popped stain preparation is done before stain to equalize absorption, and the same stain and finish system goes down across everything. Once DuraSeal Special Walnut goes down across all boards, the distinction between old and new disappears.
Why does DuraSeal Special Walnut look different under different lighting?
DuraSeal Special Walnut is a pigment-based stain. Under natural or cool light it reads as a cool walnut-brown. Under warm incandescent or warm LED recessed lighting it shifts warmer, pulling toward an amber-brown. This shift is predictable and we show it to homeowners using samples evaluated in their actual rooms before committing. The Crabtree Heights homeowners saw both readings and chose the stain knowing how it would look under kitchen lighting.
What is Bona IntenseSeal and why use it before Bona Traffic HD?
Bona IntenseSeal is a penetrating sealer designed to lock in oil-based stains before a water-based topcoat goes down. Without it, the first water-based coat can lift or bleed the stain unevenly. IntenseSeal bonds the stain into the wood grain and creates a stable, uniform surface that the Traffic HD topcoats adhere to consistently. On a job where matching color wall to wall matters, skipping the sealer coat is a risk not worth taking.
How long does a full install and refinish project take?
A project at this scope, covering new room installation plus lace-in work plus a main-level sand and refinish, typically runs 5 to 7 working days. Installation goes first. The floor needs time to acclimate and for adhesive to cure before sanding begins. Then sanding, staining, sealing, and two finish coats each need drying time between. You should plan for 4 to 5 days of not walking on the floors during the finish phase.
